The foundation of our town planning practice is placemaking. In the design of new towns, villages and hamlets, we utilize the principles of The New Urbanism to create beautiful and memorable places that are based on traditional precedents and drawn from local context. This new urbanism is rooted in the traditional neighborhood, first established by Clarence Perry in 1929. This neighborhood unit is the fundamental building block of the human habitat and is based on a ¼ mile (5-minute) walk. In its ideal form, the neighborhood is a compact development pattern with a discernable center and edge.
This approach leads to the creation of diverse, attractive and walkable places with quality open space. These new towns, villages and hamlets put an emphasis on aesthetics and human comfort, while enhancing livability and creating a sense of place. In addition, they aid in the conservation of natural environments and allow for balanced transportation options.
