Grand Rapids, Michigan
As uptown Grand Rapids’ first new residential construction in more than 50 years, this mixed use infill project established a new neighborhood within the Fairmount Square Historic District. Economic and community development within the framework of urban design and historic preservation provided inspiration for this unique privately developed project.
- Provided urban design expertise to the consortium of three developers responsible for this urban infill project in order to integrate a new contextual neighborhood into an established urban fabric.
- Collaborated with architects, preservationists and citizens to craft a plan that combines rowhouses, retail buildings and a renovated historic structure with a formal pocket park and sustainable infrastructure.
- Combined master planning, civil engineering and land surveying services to assist in the implementation of the project.
- Incorporated sustainable site design measures including raingardens, permeable pavement and a cistern that reclaims stormwater for irrigation of the park into the project design.
