Brikyaat Development Plan

Nederveld is pleased to announce the recent completion of The Brikyaat Development Plan, which is a community based design initiative that represents a consensus of neighbors, business owners and other stakeholders from the Midtown Neighborhood. The design team, which was comprised of Nederveld, Lott3Metz and Past Perfect worked with the community for 16-months while crafting the document. During this process, the design team conducted two charrettes, the first for the general neighborhood and the second for one of the neighborhood’s most precious assets, The Fulton Street Farmers Market. These charrettes provided valuable input from a variety of different stakeholders, which eventually informed the character of the final plan. During a series of intensive feedback loops, the team and stakeholders continually worked to refine the plan, ultimately creating a document that meshed a strong and creative vision with the existing urban context.

The Brikyaat Neighborhood is part of the Midtown Neighborhood Association and is bounded by East Fulton Street, Fuller Avenue, Fountain Street and Eastern Avenue. The Brikyaat Quarter gains its name from Midtown’s history as a brickyard, and in addition to being home to the Fulton Street Farmers Market, also includes the historic Fulton Street Cemetery, a resurgent and thriving neighborhood business district, excellent proximity to downtown Grand Rapids and last, but not least, some very dedicated citizens who proved to have an unwavering commitment to the betterment of their neighborhood.

The final implementation of the plan will occur when it gains formal approval and inclusion as an Area Specific Plan in the City of Grand Rapids Master Plan.
