Brikyaat Neighborhood plan Adopted

Brikyaat Plan becomes first Area Specific Plan

At the July 10th meeting of the Grand Rapids City Commission, Nederveld’s Brikyaat Neighborhood Development Plan was adopted as an Area Specific Plan as part of the City of Grand Rapids Master Plan.

This award winning plan represents the city’s first Area Specific Plan to be adopted as an amendment to the 2002 master plan.

The master plan amendment process began in February 2007 when the Brikyaat Plan was submitted to the Grand Rapids Planning Commission.  Upon review at the planning commission, the plan was submitted for review to all contiguous municipalities, the West Michigan Regional Planning Commission and the Kent County Board of Commissioners. This review process was completed on June 6, 2007.

On June 14, the City of Grand Rapids Planning Commission unanimously voted to adopt the proposed plan as an Area Specific Plan after the public hearing resulted in all favorable comments from those in attendance.

The City of Grand Rapids Master Plan states the purpose of an Area Specific Plan as follows:
“Area-specific planning is an effective way to ensure that land use and development goals for a particular area of the city are identified to protect its unique character while encouraging reinvestment and revitalization. These plans provide a closer analysis of an area than a citywide master plan by establishing a specific mix of uses and building types, roadway alignments and design treatments, and necessary public facilities and amenities needed to make a neighborhood, mixed-use area or business district a success.”

The Brikyaat Development Plan, which was collaboration between Nederveld, Lott3Metz and Past Perfect, represents a sixteen month design process based on public participation between the design team, neighbors, business owners, farmers market vendors and other stakeholders from the Midtown Neighborhood. During this process, two charrettes were conducted along with numerous feedback loops, which engaged the public in the entire design process and ultimately led to a master plan which meshed a strong and creative vision with the existing urban context.
