The City of Hudsonville adopts Master Plan

Hudsonville Downtown Master Plan adopted by City Planning Commission

On November 21, 2007, the City of Hudsonville Planning Commission formally adopted The Hudsonville Downtown Master Plan.  This document, which was created by Nederveld, is part of Ottawa County’s Urban Smart Growth Demonstration Project and will guide the city in giving urban structure and form to future downtown development.  The Downtown Master Plan, along with the Architectural Design Elements Portfolio (adopted in 2006), represents a highly visual, graphics based document intended to illustrate the character of the community to developers, citizens and planning staff.  During the creation and implementation process, which took over one-year, several public meetings occurred with residents, business owners and other stakeholders in order to establish the vision and character that the citizens of Hudsonville desired for their downtown.

The Hudsonville Downtown Master Plan graphically illustrates the intended character of the future development patterns for a specific area of the city.  It attempts to give a sense of place, a destination and a walkable urban context to the downtown core, while still maintaining the charm of a small Michigan city. The master plan includes an Area Specific Plan, which conceptualizes possible development of this area with a figure-ground drawing, along with renderings and photographs depicting the downtown vision.  In addition to these illustrations, the master plan includes a Future Land Use Plan which denotes the different context zones associated with the downtown, along with areas reserved for civic uses and parks.  The context zones established within the Future Land Use Plan are form-based rather than use-based, and promote a mix of uses and building types.  These context zones will correspond directly to the Architectural Design Elements Portfolio and a new downtown form-based code, which is being completed as the next step in this project.
